The Works opens in November. Horwich, a village of fewer than 4,000 people, begins to transform.
Horwich produces its 1,000th locomotive.
More than 5,000 people work at the Works, making Horwich one of the six leading railway towns in Britain. Engineers including Sir Nigel Gresley and Sir Henry Fowler trained here.
The last steam locomotive leaves in 1957, and the last diesel in 1962.
The Works closes after 97 years. Over its life it built more than 1,800 steam locomotives and repaired around 50,000.

Restoring the last surviving workshops of the Loco Works as the community heart of Rivington Chase.
